Assessing the Health of Your Middle Ear
Impedance Audiometry, also known as Tympanometry, is a quick and painless test that evaluates how well your middle ear and eardrum are functioning. It helps detect conditions that may affect hearing, even when the hearing levels themselves are normal.
This test is commonly recommended for both children and adults experiencing ear-related symptoms.
When is Impedance Audiometry Recommended?
Your audiologist may suggest this test if you have:
- Ear pain or discomfort
- A feeling of blocked or full ears
- Frequent ear infections
- Hearing difficulties
- Fluid in the middle ear
- Eardrum problems
- Suspected Eustachian tube dysfunction
How is the Test Performed?
During the test:
- A small soft probe is gently placed in the ear canal.
- The device changes air pressure and measures how your eardrum responds.
- The test takes only 5–10 minutes and is completely painless.
- No active response is required from the patient.
What Can This Test Detect?
Impedance Audiometry helps identify:
- Middle ear infections
- Fluid behind the eardrum
- Eustachian tube dysfunction
- Eardrum perforation
- Abnormal middle ear pressure
- Problems with the tiny hearing bones (ossicles)
