Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a specialized hearing test that evaluates how sound signals travel from the ear to the brainstem. It is a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure used to assess hearing in individuals who cannot respond reliably during conventional hearing tests.
BERA is especially useful for newborns, infants, young children, and adults with suspected hearing or neurological disorders.
When is BERA Recommended?
Your doctor or audiologist may recommend BERA if:
- A newborn or infant requires hearing screening
- A child is unable to participate in regular hearing tests
- Hearing loss is suspected
- There is delayed speech and language development
- There are concerns about the hearing nerve or brainstem

How is the Test Performed?
During the test:
- Small electrodes are placed on the head and behind the ears.
- Soft earphones deliver clicking sounds or tones.
- The electrodes record the brain’s response to these sounds.
- The test is painless and usually takes 30–60 minutes.
- Young children may be tested while naturally asleep or under medical guidance when necessary.
